Difficulty Settings and Endless Mode

Difficulty is the last choice before the shutter opens. It sets the extra you earn on every sale, how hard rent climbs, what the Business Permit and the deed cost, and how quickly reputation moves. The same screen holds the Skip Intro and Endless Mode switches.

Whatever you produce is earned at the counter, so the retail markup decides what a finished bottle brings in: an extra 20% on Price Gouge, nothing extra on Thin Margins.

Business Permit (Credits)
3,000
Deed base price (Credits)
36,000

The steepest bills in the game: a 3,000-Credit permit, a 36,000-Credit deed and no rent grace at all.

Side-by-side numbers

Rent rise is the percentage added each time the Landlord raises the rent. The deed price is the starting figure; it creeps up a little every day.

What the setting changes in play

Money

Markup
The retail markup is added when you sell, so it lifts every sale from food to finished goods.
Rent
Rent rises over time however well the week went; the percentage above is applied at each increase.
Prices
On Thin Margins, upgrades and Dr. Jackson's stock cost 50% more. Hotfix 1.0.0.2 cut his markup on Mark Up from 25% to 15%.
Deed
The deed's price creeps up every day, so on any setting an early buyout is the cheaper one.

Standing

Reputation
Price Gouge multiplies gains by 1.5 and losses by 0.5; Thin Margins uses 0.75 for gains and 1.25 for losses.
Rent grace
Price Gouge and Mark Up forgive your first refused rent and add it to the next bill. Thin Margins and Red Ink have no grace, so a refusal evicts you.
Permit
Without a permit the Mentor warns on day 24, permits go on sale two weeks later and enforcement starts a week after that.
Merchant
Since hotfix 1.0.0.1 the Merchant states the discount he really takes on your difficulty.

Endless Mode and Skip Intro

Endless Mode

Keeps a run going instead of ending it. Its own description warns that certain scripted events and customers will not spawn; Georgio's story schedule is one of them, so his day-43 loan offer never arrives.

Skip Intro

Starts the run without the opening introduction. The Chemist scenario skips it automatically, and some starting shop signs depend on whether the intro was skipped.

Difficulty achievements

From Nothing, the Hard Way needs a Rock Bottom win on hard mode. Prodigious, owning the deed before day 50, is far easier with a 12,000-Credit deed than a 36,000-Credit one.
