Buyers and bargaining

How to Bargain and Who Buys What

An item's base value is only the opening number. Each customer type accepts certain kinds of goods and some add a fixed change to the offer; the game then works out the deal from the item and the buyer in front of you. Match your stock to the right buyer, then decide how hard to push.

Produce, ingots and salvage only pay once a buyer who wants that type of goods comes to the window.

Read these as rules, not prices: the offer is calculated from the current item and buyer each time.

Pushing a deal

Every negotiation can be pushed past the opening offer. Each move has a chance of working and a cost when it fails.

Blackmail

During a relevant station event
+15 to that chance
Reputation counts
divided by 4
They refuse
−5 reputation
Blackmailing someone innocent costs −7 on a refusal, and half the time they walk out instead for −10.

Threats

Takes
20% of the value
They refuse
−7 reputation
Chance they walk out
50%
Walk-out cost
−10 reputation
A threat you cannot back up carries the same risk as blackmailing an innocent customer.

Reputation counts
divided by 6

−3 reputation
Standing matters more when you blackmail (÷4) than when you simply push the price (÷6).
Already unpopular? It costs double
When your reputation with a faction is negative, reputation penalties are multiplied by 2: the failed markup that normally costs 3 points costs 6. Customer budget also affects whether an offer is accepted, so treat the figures above as odds, not a guarantee.

At the counter

Put the item on the Negotiation Counter, then open the Negotiation Interface to make the deal. For each customer you can approve, refuse, report them or look away, and every choice shifts your reputation.

Shady margins

1Cut a product's quality.
2Relabel counterfeits as genuine; the arrogant elite make good marks.
3Buy stolen goods cheap and fence them.
4Take advantage of the poor, or help them.

Security is not the only danger: the Lower Levels have mob justice. Some customers barter instead of paying cash, and advanced licenses open the underground market.
